Can of Worms chatting to DJ Chris in the Wild Coast FM radio studio |
DJ Chris was an extremely welcoming host and helped the whole band to feel welcome and relaxed going into the interview. Here's a quick run down of what we chatted about!
Starting with introductions for each band member - Cindy on vocals, myself April on sax, flute and clarinet, Dave on the bass, Debs on percussion and sound effects, Niel who plays the fool (and also lead guitar) and Steve on the drums (unfortunately percussionist Jay couldn't be at the interview). We chatted about how long we've been together. Unbelievably it's almost two years for most of the band who started off as a percussion based group and took the decision to find a vocalist to add more diversity to the sound. Steve heard Cindy singing karaoke in an East London bar and invited her along to practise to see if it worked. It did - it worked well and soon Niel's guitar came into the mix to build up the sound and bring in his laid-back musical creativity. Around 6 months later Steve invited myself to come along to practise and add some sax to the mix which opened up a whole new soundscape and dimension to the music.
Our background as musicians is interesting with so many different characters and histories involved. Cindy's singing Christmas carols with her mom, Niel's studying of music after school, my own musical story which see's music intricately entwined in my history - from making up songs to my storybooks on the piano at my Grandad's house, through picking up the recorder at school and following on with a love for woodwind instruments, a BA in Music and most recently, finding the Worms.
Our creative processes as a band are organic and open-minded with each member bringing different inspirations and styles. Often Steve will have a song in mind with lyrics and an idea of a chord structure, Cindy brings a saucy vocal melody and a tattered page of hand scrawled, sharp-as-a-tack lyrics, Dave plays us a bad-ass bass line or one of us carries in a tiny piece of musical inspiration that sets off the whole process and becomes an opportunity to create a new jam and see where it leads.
Why "Can of Worms"? Because it's a great band name! We also feel that it suits the band history and ethos - we really have opened up a can of worms with this one ;)
We shared exciting news of our much anticipated new album which we've been working on in the studio for the past few months. We signed off our recording sessions on Tuesday and have left our music in the safe hands of the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC) where it will be edited and mastered in time for the imminent release. At the same time we will be launching our new website - we can't wait to share the excitement with friends and fans.
The WCFM interview was inspired by our upcoming Fundraising Farm Jam on Sunday 9th October (originally scheduled for Sunday 11th September but postponed due to bad weather predictions), The Farm Jam has been organised to help the band to raise funds for our trip to the US to be a part of the SXSW Music Festival in Texas in March. Tickets are on sale now - read more in our previous blog.
A huge thanks goes out to the team at Wild Coast FM for their continued support and shared excitement in what's to come! Keep in touch with us and watch out for news of the album launch on our facebook page - see you at our next gig!
